From France to Guyana: How 3x3 Basketball Changed My Game (And Why Your Kids Should Try It Too)

Hey, I’m Nate Butler.

Back in March 2025, I jumped into something new—3x3 basketball. I’d played ball my whole life, but this version? It’s a totally different vibe. Fast, intense, and all about smart, quick decisions. I’ve been lucky to travel with it—from Puerto Rico, to France, and most recently, Guyana, where my team just picked up our first tournament win.

I’ve learned a lot along the way—and now I want to share all of it with the next generation of hoopers.

So, What’s the Deal with 3x3?

If you haven’t seen it yet, 3x3 is like basketball with the volume turned all the way up. It’s just 3 players per team, one basket, and 12 seconds on the shot clock. No walking the ball up, no time to overthink—you gotta move, react, and be ready for everything.

It’s all about:

- Playing under pressure

- Making quick decisions

- Knowing how to move without the ball

- Being a complete player (because there’s nowhere to hide)

What I’ve Picked Up Playing Around the World

In France, the game was super polished—great timing, spacing, and tactical reads.

Puerto Rico brought that heart and hustle—it was physical, passionate, and fast.

Guyana? That was all about chemistry. Everyone on the same page, fighting for every bucket.

Every place had its own flavor, and it helped me grow not just as a player, but as a coach.

Why I’m Bringing It Back to the Kids

3x3 is the perfect way to teach young players how to really understand the game. It’s not just about who can jump the highest or shoot the deepest—it’s about who can think, move, and play smart. I’ve seen how this format sharpens skills fast.

If your kid is trying to level up—whether they’re new to basketball or already competitive—3x3 can give them that edge. And I’m here to teach them everything I’ve learned out on those international courts.
